Pontoon boat gets stuck in mud in Egg Harbor Township waterway

State Police, using a hovercraft on loan from an Egg Harbor Township fire company, rescued six people from a pontoon boat that got stuck
in the mud in a waterway in the township.

The people were trying out a new boat when they got stuck on a mudflat in Risley Channel about an hour before low tide, State Police
Sgt. Stephen Jones said. Strong winds blew the tide out to 2 feet below normal low tide. By the time help arrived, the boat was surrounded
by about 30 feet of mud, Jones said.

Risley Channel is located between the Margate Causeway and Somers Point-Longport Bridge.

State Police could not bring a helicopter out because of the wind, so authorities called the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company to use a
hovercraft that was able to travel above the soupy mud, Jones said. It took an hour and a half to bring everyone to shore, and Jones said the pontoon boat was still sitting in the mud Saturday evening. No one was injured.
